How to Make Glow in the Dark Cupcakes

From fun glowing Halloween cupcakes to lighting up the night with your favorite dessert, creating glow in the dark cupcakes is not only easy, it’s fun. All you need is a black light!

Ingredients

  • Cupcakes or unfrosted baked goods of choice, either homemade or purchased

  • 7 cups of confectioner’s/icing sugar

  • 1 cup vegetable shortening

  • 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract

  • 5 tablespoons tonic water

  • Neon food coloring

  • 0.3 oz/8.5g pack of either lime or orange gelatin

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • 1 cup chilled tonic water

Steps

Preparing the Frosting

  1. Combine the confectioner’s sugar, vegetable shortening, vanilla and 3 tablespoons of tonic water in a large bowl. Use an electric mixer to combine and beat on low speed until full combined.

  2. Add the remaining two tablespoons of tonic water to the mixture and continue mixing on high until the frosting is of piping consistency.

  3. Separate the frosting into two bowls. Set one bowl aside and add neon food coloring to the other bowl of frosting.

    • Coordinate flavor and color; for example, use orange coloring if you plan to flavor with orange gelatin, and so on.

Piping the Frosting

  1. Place the neon-colored frosting in a piping bag.

  2. Pipe the frosting onto cooled baked goods. Bring each piped frosting to a peak in the center.

  3. Place the frosted baked goods in the freezer and allow to chill for up to an hour.

Adding the Gelatin

  1. Prepare the gelatin by adding 1 cup of boiling water to gelatin. Mix well and then add the 3 tablespoons of chilled tonic water.

  2. Combine well. Then transfer to a large bowl.

  3. Dip the frozen frosted cupcakes into chilled (but not set) gelatin. Dip only the frosting part but not the cake.

    • Cover the frosting completely with gelatin.

    • Return the baked goods to the freezer.

  4. Allow the cupcakes to set for a few minutes in the freezer. Then re-dip into the gelatin.

    • For best results, dip the cupcakes into the gelatin up to six times, returning them to the freezer for a few minutes in between dips.

  5. Chill the baked and frosted cupcakes in the refrigerator for several minutes to set completely.

  6. Serve the glow-in-the dark frosted cupcakes underneath black light. This will show off their spooky glow.

Tips

  • Skip the gelatin step if you don’t want to add flavor to the white frosting. The white frosting will glow on its own.

  • Add mini chocolate chips or sprinkles to frosting before dipping into the gelatin.

  • Place cupcakes close to the black light for a true glow.
