How to Make Furry Cat Ears

Adding cat's ears to your head using fun or fake fur and elastic or ribbon cat's ears is a cinch with this tutorial.

If you'd like to use hair clips in place of ribbon, see How to make cat ear clips.

Steps

  1. Create the cat's ears on paper. This will be your template. You might like to try different sizes on your head until you get the size that works best for you. Keep this design as your template for the remaining steps.

  2. Create the cat's ears in wire. Following the paper template, bend the wire into the shape of the cat's ears. Do this for both ears and you should end up with two triangle shaped ears.

  3. Cut out the fake fur. Following the paper templates again, cut out four triangle shapes in fur. These should be a little larger than the template, though, as the fur needs to hold the wire triangles inside once stitched up.

    • Remember that you can always make it smaller if it's too big but you can't make it bigger if it's too small.

  4. Place two fur pieces together, fur sides facing each other. Sew down each side but leave the bottom edge unsewn. That is the part you are going to insert the wire through to shape the ears.

  5. Make one more ear, as you need two, as in the previous step.

  6. Turn the ears inside out so that you can see the fur. The ear shape should be really obvious now.

  7. Place one wire triangle piece inside each ear. Sew up the bottom of the ears now. It doesn't matter if this sewing line is messy, as nobody is going to see it.

  8. Create the band for the ears. Measure the elastic band or ribbon around your head. Sew or hot glue the ends together to form a circular headband that fits your head.

  9. Attach the ears to the headband. Mark the placement for the ears. Do this by checking in the mirror where the ears look best and making marks on the headband as it is on your head; it might be easiest to have someone help you at this point.

  10. Hot glue the ears onto the headband in the positions that you marked. Allow to dry.

  11. Check that the whole thing fits and looks right. Make any adjustments as needed. Enjoy your cute new cat's ears - you can now show them off to everybody.

Tips

  • To put them behind your hair: Put them on like you would put on a necklace, where they hang from you neck. Make sure the ears are in front. Now pull them up on your head. Make sure the back of the band is on the base of your neck.

  • If you don't have wire, you can use paperclips. Just straighten them out and use them as wire. It's almost the same thing, though don't worry if they don't make a perfect triangle. When you put them in the fur it won't matter. Just use some glue to bind the sides until you put them in.

Warnings

  • Fake or fun fur makes a mess when cut. Have something ready to sweep or vacuum it up.

  • Use care when handling hot glue, as it can easily burn.
