Chemicals we encounter daily pass right through the skin and find their way into our systems. Not only do these products pose some impact to our health, their commercial production threatens the environment. To top it off, sometimes it breaks the bank to buy the stuff!
This powdered laundry detergent can be used in all agitator-type washers and in HE washers that can take powdered detergent. If your HE washer requires liquid detergent, you may mix 1 - 2 tablespoons of detergent with 1/2 cup of water.
Steps
- Grate 2 bars of Fels Naptha Soap.
- Switch from the grater to the chopping blade and chop until the soap is reduced to little granules. You can grate by hand and chop with a rounded bowl chopper or just mix in the other ingredients with the grated soap and not worry about the chopping. Use of the processor makes the whole thing easier and chopping makes keeping it easier to keep the product mixed.
- Add 2 cups each of Borax and washing soda. Mix and keep mixing until everything is evenly distributed. A single batch can be mixed in the processor.
- Wash your clothes by using 1 -2 tablespoonfuls for each load depending on the hardness of the water. For very heavily soiled clothes, you may use additional detergent.
Tips
- Washing soda alters the surface tension of the water and keeps the detergent moving through the laundry as the washing machine does its job.
- Borax boosts the power of the detergent and aids in whitening and stain removal without damaging colors.
- Use 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle as a fabric softener.
- All ingredients can be purchased at a hardware store.
