How to Make a DIY Swing From an Old Tire and Chain

Make your kids a tire swing that is durable and safe. It's a fantastic way to recycle an unwanted old tire too!

Steps

  1. Find a used tire.

  2. Clean it thoroughly. Scrub well and use disinfectant.

  3. Drill some holes on the bottom side of the tire. This will be the base of your swing and will prevent the tire swing from becoming a breeding place for insects like mosquitoes.

  4. Obtain 3 U-bolts.

    • Spread them out evenly on the tire.

  5. Drill the holes for the U-bolts.

  6. Color the tire if desired using spray paint. Coat it with white first then your desired color. Allow to dry.

  7. Insert the U-bolts in the holes you drilled earlier.

  8. Screw the nuts tightly on the U-bolts.

    • Do the same with the other U-bolts.

  9. Obtain about 12 feet of steel chain. Have it cut into 4 feet giving you 3 sets of chain for each U-bolt to attach to.

  10. Get another 3 U-bolts, the ones with a lock. Slip it on the end of the chain.

  11. Attach the chain to the U-bolts and lock them into place.

  12. Combine the 3 chains into one big U-bolt. Find a sturdy place to hang your swing.

  13. Enjoy your durable tire swing.

Warnings

  • Don't use a tire with steel belts inside when making a tire swing. They can pop through the rubber and cause injury to children while swinging.

  • Never use tires that are covered in dirt or oil when making tire swings. This can cause the riders to get filthy. Give tires a good wash down with heavy duty detergent first; if a dirty one cleans up well, then it should be okay.

  • Limit the amount of people on the tire to one or two at most at a time. The tree branch only has so much strength.

  • Supervise children when they are using the tire swing to be sure they are using it properly.

  • Tell anyone using the swing that they must sit on it and not stand; standing is dangerous when swinging on a tire swing.

  • Tell all swing users not to stand behind another person when that person is swinging.
