How to Make Peppermint Patty Candies at Home

Perhaps you have heard of York peppermint patties and would like to recreate these delicious treats yourself. They can easily be made at home, if you have a few ingredients in the house. This article will teach you how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/5 teaspoon butter, softened

  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons cream

  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped into pieces

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

Steps

  1. Place waxed paper or aluminum foil on a cookie sheet.

  2. Mix together the butter, sugar, cream and all extracts on slow speed, using a mixer that has a pole connected to it, until fully incorporated. Increase the speed from medium to high, and mix until the mixture just stays together, about 1/2 minute to a full minute, and is fluffy but not friably fluffy.

    • If the mixture is over-tacky, pour more powdered sugar into the mixture. Continue to pour it until the mixture becomes drier.

    • If the candies cannot be flattened because they're too smooth, or if you have a heated room for cooking food, allow them 20 minutes to become firm in your refrigerator.

  3. Form tiny patties with the candy and transfer them to the cookie sheet to become smooth. Do this process again with the other candies, until complete.

  4. Allow the candies 20 minutes to cool down inside your refrigerator.

  5. Warm the vegetable shortening and chocolate above a double boiler. Mix until completely and well combined.

  6. Dunk the patties, one at a time, into the melted chocolate. Do this using tools for dunking or 2 forks. Move the patties to the bowl's edge to get rid of any leftover chocolate, and line them on a cookie sheet. Place the patties in the refrigerator until the chocolate becomes firm once you are done dunking them.

  7. Serve the patties once the chocolate is firm.
