The unnamed cat, whom we shall call "Gratey", was found by a local Winchendon resident, who called the fire department to save her.
A Winchendon Fire Department spokesperson said they believed the cat had become stuck in the drain and had wedged her head between the grate as she was trying to get out.

Firefighters used soap to grease up the grate, slowly working Gratey's head out of the unconventional trap.
"When we arrived the cat was barely breathing and moving as she was hanging from the grate," a Winchendon Fire Department spokesperson said on Facebook.
"We removed the grate and uprighted [it] so the cat could breath[e]. When the owner arrived we had him get some dish soap from his house and we applied it around the cat's neck, slowly working its head back into the grate."

"Within a couple minutes we freed the cat," said the spokesperson.
