Has one of the conventional flea and tick methods stopped working for your dog, or does your four-legged friend have a compromised immune system? Whatever the reason, you can concoct a safe and natural flea and tick remedy for your dog (or cat) that should help keep him or her safe and happy.
EditSteps
EditCreate Mixture
- Pour 8 ounces of the apple cider vinegar into the spray bottle. Pour slowly so the vinegar doesn’t spill.
- Add 4 ounces of warm water to the cider vinegar, followed by ½ tsp. salt and ½ tsp. baking soda.
- Close bottle lid and shake slowly. Don’t shake vigorously because you will cause the bottle to expand and possibly explode.
EditApply Mixture to Pet
- Bring your dog into a well ventilated area where you could possibly attach his leash to a hook or chair (if he/she won’t sit and stay on his/her own).
- Brush the dog well first with a dog brush and then with the flea comb to remove as many fleas manually.
- Perform a tick check by running your hand across the dog’s fur and exposing the skin. Remove ticks with tweezers and be careful to not break the tick when removing (you want the entire tick to be expelled from the dog).
- Spray dog with cider vinegar mixture, starting around the tail area and working your way toward the front of the dog.
- If your dog is especially furry/fluffy, you may want to follow up sprays with a good brushing to ensure the mixture gets deep inside the hair follicles.
- Around the face area, spray the mixture into your hand and rub around the head and ears, being careful not to get any of the mixture into the dog’s eye area (which would burn).
EditTips
- Follow up with your veterinarian, who can perform a full flea and tick inspection.
- Contact your pest control specialist if fleas and ticks don’t dissipate.
- Consider sprinkling Borax in all the carpet areas, allow it to sit for a few hours and then vacuum. Secure pets when you do this.
