How to Create Ombre Wooden Utensils

With the ombre looking being all the rage, why not integrate this trend into your kitchen utensils as well? Instead of doing the typical ombre of brown to blonde, use vibrant colors to gradually transition from a strong color to something muted.

EditSteps

  1. Fill bottom of the vase/glass with food coloring (your choice of color). Make sure that at least 1/3 of the wooden utensil handle will be covered with color (about 30 drops).

    • Make sure the utensils will stand upright in the vase or glass.

  2. Drop wooden utensils into the vase and allow them to soak for approximately 1 to 2 hours. This will be your strongest color so allow the utensils ample soaking time.

  3. Add 1 cup of water to the vase. Leave the utensils in place as you add the water.

    • Allow the utensils to continue soaking for another hour, however check them for saturation. You want the wood to soak up the color, while at the same time it's a lighter shade.

  4. Pour one more cup of water into the vase for the final ombre layer. Allow for substantial soak time, but this layer should be the lightest so may not require the same amount of soak time.

  5. Lay utensils on a bed of paper towels to dry. Take care not to drip utensil water onto surfaces or your clothes as they contain wet dye.

    • Pat the utensils dry with another layer of towels.

  6. Coat drying utensils with olive oil.

    • Pour oil into a clean paper towel and rub towel over drying utensils. The oil will help the dye set in place.

EditThings You’ll Need

  • Wooden spoons/utensils

  • Food coloring

  • Empty vase or tall glass

  • Olive oil

  • Distilled water

  • Paper towels

EditTips

  • Hand wash these utensils as running them through the dishwasher could fade or even remove the dye.
