How to Potty Train a Puppy in an Apartment
Potty training a puppy is a little trickier when you have an apartment, since you can't install a doggie door or easily let your furry companion outside. The key is to start early and be consistent. Place your dog on a regular feeding schedule so you can predict when she'll need to go outside, and reward her every time she demonstrates good behavior. Before you know it, your puppy will run to the door and wag her tail instead of having indoor accidents. Read on to learn more about how to potty train a puppy in an apartment.
EditSteps
EditStarting an Outside Routine
- Take your puppy outside frequently. When your puppy is very young, you'll need to take her outside every few hours. Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently, as they can't physically hold their bladder for more than an hour or two.[1] To avoid accidents, scoop up your puppy and take her outside once an hour like clockwork. This way your puppy will learn to associate going outside with going to the bathroom.
- Once you get to know your puppy, you'll be able to watch for signs she needs to relieve herself. As soon as you see her displaying the signs, take her outside.
- When you're housetraining a puppy, it's very important that you be available to meet her needs at all times of the day. If you leave her alone in the apartment all day it might take a very long time for her to understand what she's supposed to do when she needs to go to the bathroom. If you can't be with her all day long, have a friend stay with her.
- Feed your puppy at the same time every day. This helps to reinforce a routine and allows you to better predict when she may need to go outside. Depending on your puppy's breed and needs, feed her a few times a day. Take your puppy outside after every meal and after she drinks a lot from her water bowl.
- Pick a designated place for your puppy to relieve herself outside. Going to the same spot every time will help her remember what she's supposed to do. Living in an apartment building, you might have trouble getting all the way to the closest park. Pick a patch of grass close enough to your apartment entrance that your puppy won't have an accident on the way.
- Be sure to follow your city's ordinances regarding disposing of dog waste. Pick up after your puppy using a plastic bag.
- Dog urine isn't generally good for flowers, so try to find a public spot that isn't being tended by a careful gardner. You might find yourself the subject of a sign warning dog owners to stay away - a common sight near city apartment buildings!
- Use a command to help your puppy associate the spot with relieving herself. Say something like "go potty" or just "potty" when you set her in the designated spot. Use language to strengthen the puppy's association with the spot. Make sure you don't use the word indoors; just use it in the special spot.
- Reward your puppy when she relieves herself outside. The best way to train a puppy is to reinforce good behavior and eliminate possibilities for bad behavior. When your puppy relieves herself outside, giving her praise and a treat will make her want to do it again. Say "good girl" or "good boy" in a loving tone and give your puppy some cuddles. You can also give her a small treat each time she goes correctly.
- In order for positive reinforcement to work effectively as a training strategy, consistency is key. That means that every single time your puppy relieves herself outside, you should praise her. This is especially important in the first few months, when she's still learning correct behavior.
EditStarting an Inside Routine
- Confine your puppy to a certain area in the apartment. You can gate off your kitchen using a child or dog gate or choose a different room. This is necessary during the first few months, since keeping your puppy in one place allows you to keep an eye on her so you can take her outside right away when she shows signs of needing to relieve herself. If she has too much freedom, she'll end up going to the bathroom before you can catch her to take her outside.
- Your puppy is ready to spend time in the rest of the apartment after she has learned to signal to you that she needs to go outside, either by moving toward the door or looking at it. You'll also know she's ready when she has very few accidents in the apartment.
- Consider having an indoor bathroom spot. If your apartment is on a high floor in your building, it might be difficult to get outside in time for your puppy to go to the bathroom. If you have a small dog who makes manageable messes, you can consider paper training your dog instead of taking her outside every time. Line an area of the room with newspapers or special training pads you can buy at the pet store. Use the same training method you'd use for an outdoor bathroom spot, carrying your puppy to the papers each time she has to go. Reward her when she goes successfully.[2]
- You can also use a sod box as a place for your puppy to eliminate. Fill a shallow plastic container with sod or dog litter, and place it on top of newspapers.[3]
- When you clean up after an accident your puppy has had, you can place the soiled paper towels or rags in the designated area so that your puppy associates the the smell of urine with her bathroom spot.
- Keep your puppy in a crate at night and while you're away. Puppies actually like the feeling of being in a small, cozy crate - it makes them feel safe and secure. For this reason you should never use a crate as a form of punishment; it should be your puppy's personal safe place. Puppies don't like soiling their living space, so make sure you take your puppy outside so she can go to the bathroom right before you put her in the crate.
- Puppies can sleep for about 4 hours before they need to relieve themselves. Very young puppies might wake up barking, though, so you should line the crate with towels just in case your puppy has an accident in the night.
- If you hear your puppy barking in the crate, take her outside to relieve herself and place her back in the crate. Be sure you reward her when she relieves herself.
- Clean up accidents right away. If your puppy has an accident in her crate or elsewhere inside, be sure to clean it up and sanitize the spot so it no longer smells like urine. If an area smells like urine the puppy will instinctually want to relieve herself in the same spot again.
- Don't scold your puppy for having an accident.[4] Puppies don't respond well to negative reinforcement; it only makes them afraid. If your puppy is relieving herself in your apartment, pick her up and immediately take her outside to the designated bathroom spot. When she successfully finishes doing her business there, reward her before taking her back inside.
- Never yell at your puppy or spank her when you see her having an accident. You will teach your puppy to be afraid of you, and it won't help her learn what to do when she needs to relieve herself.
- If you find a mess in your apartment after the deed has been done, don't ever rub your puppy's nose in it or try to discipline her. It doesn't work; it just confuses the puppy. Simply clean up the mess and take the puppy outside more often to continue her training.
EditTips
- Be consistent. If you change from paper training to house training half way through, it will confuse your puppy, and make it more difficult, but done consistently potty training your puppy can
- When cleaning up the mess use an odor neutralizer, or vinegar can do the job as well. Nothing with ammonia in it, as that smells like urine to puppies, and they'll try to go in that spot again, what you don't want to happen.
- Never get angry and hit your dog. Do not reward the bad behaviors and reward the good behaviors.

How to Feel Pretty
You are the only one who can decide you are truly pretty. All it takes is a change in your thinking and a boost in confidence and self-esteem. And yes, it is easier said than done.
EditSteps
EditBeing Pretty on the Inside
- Understand your own prettiness. This is the most important step for feeling pretty. You have to understand that your beauty comes from you, not from any outside source. But you have to practice feeling this way.
- Write a list of of all the good things about yourself. This includes things like helping someone carry their groceries, listening to a friend, or being the best at puns.
- Every morning, when you wake up, go to the bathroom mirror, smile at yourself and say aloud "I am awesome" and "I am happy." The more you say it the more you will convince your brain that it is true.
- Write a list of things you think are beautiful about yourself. Maybe you have big brown eyes, a cute nose, or full lips, or a great laugh. If you can't think of any, ask a trusted friend or family member.
- When you start having negative thoughts about yourself, remember your lists.
- Stop negativity in its tracks. Negative thoughts cause our brain to believe the negativity. If we think we're ugly, our brain will be convinced of that. You have to convince your brain that those thoughts aren't true.[1]
- When you start to have a negative thought, label it as such. Example: "My nose is hideous." Say to yourself: "I'm having a thought that my nose is hideous." It makes it so that thought isn't you.
- Let the negative thoughts go. You are not your thoughts, but they can be extremely harmful to your self esteem.
- Replace the negative thought with a positive thought. Even if you don't believe the positive thought, you can trick your brain into believing it.[2]
- Build your self confidence. Everyone has good qualities, both inside and outside, but it's important to realize that people are more than their outer appearance. It's great to admire people (and yourself!) for their physical attractiveness, but it's even better to look at what's on the inside. There will always be someone prettier, more successful, with more romantic partners.
- Don't judge yourself so harshly. You are your own worst enemy. Give yourself the freedom to have days where you don't feel attractive. Confidence is about trusting in yourself even on days where you don't feel like it.
- Don't judge other people. What you think about other people says a lot about you. Try to think positive, kind thoughts towards others. It will affect your positivity towards yourself.[3]
- Don't compare yourself to others. This will only cause you to lose confidence in yourself. Besides, that person with the perfect hair might be leading a very difficult life in other respects.
- Fake it until you make it. You can trick your brain into being confident if you fake confidence. Act like you already know you're pretty and you will start to believe it.[4]
- Don't feel as though you have to have a romantic partner to be worthwhile. Your self-worth and your confidence rely on you and only you. If you place too much self-worth control in the hands of other people, you won't learn true confidence.
- Indulge yourself in a selfie. You control the picture and you can make it so it emphasizes your most attractive features. When you're feeling less confident, pull it out and remind yourself that you are pretty!
EditBeing Pretty on the Outside
- Change your appearance. Changing your appearance can give you a boost in confidence and help you out of an appearance rut. It can also be fun!
- Change your hairstyle. Cut it, part it differently, give it highlights or dye it pink.
- Give yourself dark smokey eyes or wear bright red lipstick.
- Go for a free makeover. Make your way to the makeup counter of your local department store and ask for some assistance trying new colors. If you always wear shades of plum, tell the sales associate to break out the peach tones for a completely new look. You'll go home with a fab new take on your face.
- Picking out a new item of clothing can change your entire wardrobe: a new shirt, skirt, or even a scarf.
- Wear clothes, make-up, and accessories that make YOU feel pretty and confident. Clothes that you feel comfortable in are better than clothes that may be the height of "fashion" but which you don't enjoy wearing. Your uncomfortableness with yourself will show.
- Check that your clothes fit correctly. It's hard to be comfortable when your jeans dig in too tightly at your waist, or your bra leaves marks on your skin.
- Pamper yourself. Giving yourself some time alone to do something relaxing can give you a boost in self-esteem and also help you relax, which in turn helps keep up your positivity.
- Feel pretty all the way down to your feet with an at-home pedicure. Go as wild as you want! Wear a toe ring or two. Paint each nail a different color, use glitter or sample a shade that you're not quite ready to wear on your hands.
- Give your skin some extra special care. When you pamper yourself, it shows. So give yourself at-home facial for skin-smoothing results.
- Work to be healthy. Healthiness is not only considered attractive, but it also means that your mind is healthy, too! It can help with depression and with keeping you from getting sick. It's hard to feel pretty when you've got a cold.
- Sleep is a huge factor in healthiness. Too little sleep strains the nervous system and can make you more susceptible to depression and illness. If you can't get the recommended 8 to 9 hours each night, make sure to catch a nap during the day.[5]
- Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin which boost your mood and your body. There are lots of different ways of exercising: yoga, dance, taking a walk or run, aerobics, zumba. They can be a lot of fun.[6]
- Learn to meditate. Meditation can help with retraining your brain to let go of negative thoughts. It also can help with depression, eating disorders, and stress.[7]
- Laugh. Grab a friend and reminisce about a funny event you both witnessed, or watch your favorite comedy. Laughter can do things like relieve pain, help you cope with difficult situations, and improve your mood.[8]
- Soak up some rays. Sunshine's known to be a major mood-booster. In fact, in some Northern European countries where the sun rarely shines during winter, people go for light therapy to fight depression. (Take care when being in the sun, and be sure to wear sunscreen.)
EditBeing Pretty
- Be attractive by being kind and respectful and pleasant. People may react initially to physical attractiveness, but studies have found that they will re-evaluate their perception of that attractiveness based on personality traits.[9] [10]
- Listen to people when they talk. You don't have to be a doormat to listen to others and people will notice that you have taken an interest in their words.
- Kindness is one of the most important traits in rating attractiveness according to Yale psychologist, Paul Bloom.[11] This means helping others out when they need it and not being judgmental about others (see steps above).
- Decide how you define attractiveness. Remember that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Different cultural groups have different beauty norms. The obsession with thin being pretty only really began in the 1960s.[12] [13]
- Remember that the people in magazines and movies and t.v. shows have a whole army of hairstylists, make-up artists, lighting, and photoshop. Of course you don't look like them. They don't even look like them.[14] [15]
EditTips
- Color your mood happy. When you're feeling down about what you see in the mirror, don't grab for that gray coat that seems to match your mood perfectly. Put on a bright color to kick you back into gear. For example, try red, the most energetic color in the spectrum.
- Tell yourself that somebody out there will look at you and think that all the imperfections that you think you have are perfection. There is at least one person out there for each person who thinks that he or she is beautiful in every single way possible.
- Find clothes and accessories that express things that you love, like your favorite books, TV shows, movies, hobbies, or sports. Wearing things that are personalized to things that you like will make you feel more confident and more like you.
EditWarnings
- If you truly feel that plastic surgery will help you feel pretty, you must talk to your doctor first.
